Curaçao - A vibrant and colourful Caribbean island
1. Cultural uniqueness
Curaçao's identity is shaped by rich tapestry of cultures originating from its Dutch colonial past to the influences of Spanish colonisation and indigenous Arawak heritage. All these elements together build the island's fascinating blend of traditions. In addition to the white sandy beaches, Curaçao offers amazing historic sites worth visiting, such as Fort Amsterdam, built by the Dutch West India Company in the 17th century, and the Kura Hulanda Museum, which showcases the island's history of slavery and its African heritage.
2. Willemstad, an urban charm
Handelskade
Willemstad is made of pastel-colored buildings which line the streets and offers centuries-old architecture that tells you the story of the island's colonial history. The city’s Punda and Otrobanda vibrant districts are connected by the iconic Queen Emma Bridge which is a wonderful engineering piece. You must visit the hidden gems in the form of quaint cafes, bustling markets, and local artisan shops, each offering a glimpse into daily life in this charming capital city. You should also visit the Floating Market, where boats from Venezuela dock to sell fresh produce and seafood.
3. Street Canvas
Columbusstraat
Curaçao's streets and alleys are a scene of vibrant street art. From colorful murals depicting local legends to thought-provoking pieces addressing social issues, the walls of Willemstad are alive with creativity. Otrobanda neighborhood is the place where artists have transformed blank facades into captivating works of art making this part of the city unmissable. For a deeper dive into the island's artistic heritage, the Nautilus Art Gallery is the home to a diverse collection of contemporary Caribbean art.
4. Gastronomic Journeys
Culinary traditions from around the world converge to create a unique gastronomic experience. Some of the local delicacies include karni stoba, a hearty Caribbean stew made with seared meat and aromatic spices, or yuana, an iguana stew that pays homage to the island's indigenous roots. The bustling food markets of Willemstad are also worth a visit. This is the place where the local vendors offer fresh seafood, tropical fruits, and savory snacks, and lastly, the refreshing glass of Blue Curaçao liqueur, crafted right here on the island.
5. Curaçao's Outdoor Haven
Playa Kalki
Curacao offers a breathtaking natural landscape. Beaches surrounded by crystal-clear waters and vibrant marine life. You can dive into the depths of the Caribbean Sea to explore colorful coral reefs and ancient shipwrecks, or take to the skies with an exhilarating SeaBob excursion. If you feel rather adventurous, you should visit the island's hidden coves and secluded beaches, where you can unwind on sun-kissed sands and soak up the beauty of your surroundings.
